Ziegenbalg's Legacy

Starting Schools

Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg was instrumental in establishing schools in South India. He understood the importance of education in promoting not only literacy but also in spreading the Christian faith. His schools were among the first to offer formal education to the local Tamil population, providing both religious and secular teachings.

Printing of the Tamil Bible

One of Ziegenbalg's most significant contributions was the translation and printing of the Tamil Bible. This monumental task was completed in 1714, making it the first Protestant Bible to be printed in an Indian language. This achievement made religious texts accessible to the Tamil-speaking population and laid the foundation for further translations and publications.

Starting Churches in South Asia

Ziegenbalg also played a crucial role in establishing Protestant churches in South Asia. He founded the first Protestant church in Tranquebar, which served as a hub for his missionary activities. His efforts in church planting helped to establish a lasting Christian community in the region, which continues to thrive today.
